In a Nutshell: Step by Step

  1. Find an internship that fulfills the requirements and land the role. Remember that the requirements are that you work with a creative sector company that is 2+ years old, has 2+ full time employees, and that will provide you with a place of work and a variety of tasks.
  2. Register the position on CRIIS (Creative Industries Internship Software).
  3. CRIIS will send you the relevant documents and a link to the eLearning Safety Module. Sign and upload all docs before your 1st day of work!
  4. Complete a minimum of 240 hours.
  5. CRIIS will send you 3 required journal entries to complete during your internship.
  6. Your supervisor will receive a link to complete your performance review day after you complete your internship. You’ll have access to it once it’s complete!

The Process in Detail: Step by Step

  1. Before you begin, get your resume and cover letter polished and ready. You’ll then need to tailor both your resume and cover letter for each application (see the Tailor Your Resume page for strategies and advice). You do not need to include your references in the initial application unless specifically asked.
  2. Find a position. This is up to you and will require some work. We have an active internship job board with listings and we are here to help you and to open doors. Use your network (do you know someone who knows someone at a company you’d like to work with?) Check job sites and search engines regularly. Ask around, use LinkedIn and other social media resources, and read the section on Job Search Strategies.
  3. Once you find and accept a position, register the role on CRIIS. The position will be marked PENDING until it is approved. The position will only be approved if it meets the eligibility requirements. For information on what qualifies as a legitimate placement, see the About page section: Who can I work for?
  4. When the position is approved, CRIIS will send you the legal documents that need to be signed and uploaded by your first day of work. You must also complete the Safety Module on your D2L and upload a certificate of completion.
  5. Do the job. Embrace a “happy to help” attitude, do your best, ask questions, be punctual and polite, work hard and learn as much as you can. Periodically you will need to submit journal reports online. You’ll be using this information later when it comes time to complete your capstone project. *Note: If you have ANY concerns during your placement, you should contact your coordinator, Alex D’Arcy, at adarcy@ryerson.ca immediately.
  6. At the end of the internship, your supervisor will fill out a short performance evaluation online. Feedback is important and useful. Your supervisor will upload this online and you will have access to it on CRIIS. This feedback will not have any bearing on your academic marks.
  7. Send a thank you email or note and stay in touch.
